Quiz: Famous Landmarks
From the Pyramids to Petra — how many world landmarks do you know?
What Makes a Landmark Famous?
A landmark is a special place or building that people recognise from far away. Many landmarks are very old and tell us about life long ago. The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, for example, are more than 4,000 years old. They are ancient stone structures built as tombs for kings called pharaohs. Other famous places, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, are newer but still become monuments that millions of people visit every year. Tourists travel from all over the world to see them and take photos.
From Old Wonders to Modern Icons
Some of the most popular landmarks are ruins — old buildings that are partly broken, but still beautiful. Petra in Jordan and Machu Picchu in Peru are wonderful examples. Their architecture shows the skills of past civilisations. In Asia, the Great Wall of China stretches for thousands of kilometres across mountains. In India, the Taj Mahal is a white marble temple built as a sign of love. Today, these places are protected as part of our shared heritage, so future generations can also enjoy them.
