Present Continuous: What's Happening Now
Actions in progress — the tense for this very moment.
Explanation
We use the Present Continuous to talk about actions that are happening now or around now. The action is not finished — it is in progress.
Form: subject + am / is / are + verb-ing
- I am working.
- She is studying.
- They are playing.
When do we use it?
- Action at this moment: I am reading a book right now.
- Action around now (temporary): She is learning English this year.
- Action we can see: Look! The dog is running.
Spelling rules for -ing:
- Most verbs add -ing: play → playing
- Verbs ending in -e drop the -e: make → making
- Short verbs (one syllable, one vowel + one consonant) double the consonant: sit → sitting, run → running
Common time markers: now, right now, at the moment, today, this week, currently.
Examples
Read these everyday sentences. Notice the am / is / are + verb-ing form.
- Listen! The birds are singing.
- I can't talk. I am cooking dinner.
- What are you doing? — I am painting my room.
- She is working from home today.
- Look at the children. They are playing in the park.
- We are studying English this month.
Every example shows an action in progress — not a habit, not a finished action.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting -ing. ❌ "She is work." → ✅ "She is working."
- Forgetting am / is / are. ❌ "They playing football." → ✅ "They are playing football."
- Using stative verbs (state, not action). ❌ "I am knowing the answer." → ✅ "I know the answer." (know, like, want, need, have, be are usually not used in the continuous.)
- Wrong spelling. ❌ "I am visitting my mum." → ✅ "I am visiting my mum." (Don't double the consonant in longer verbs.)
- Using the continuous for habits. ❌ "I am drinking coffee every morning." (Habits use the simple present.) ✅ "I drink coffee every morning."
In real life
A short dialog at a coffee shop.
Anna: Hi, Tom! What are you doing here?
Tom: Hi, Anna! I am waiting for a friend. She is running late.
Anna: Oh, I see. What are you drinking?
Tom: Just an espresso. Look! The barista is making my coffee right now.
Anna: I am meeting my sister at 3 p.m. She is working nearby today.
Tom: Great! How is she doing?
Anna: She is learning French this month. She is loving it!
