Past Simple + Past Continuous

Past Simple + Past Continuous

B1 Grammar 44 sentences
Past Simple + Past Continuous 0 / 44

One tense shows what was happening, the other shows what suddenly happened — together they tell a clear story.

Explanation

English has two past tenses that work together like a camera. The Past Continuous (was / were + verb-ing) gives you the background picture — an action that was already in progress at a moment in the past. The Past Simple (verb in past form) gives you the short action that happened inside that picture.

Use this combination when a longer action is interrupted by a shorter one:

  • Longer action (background) → Past Continuous
  • Shorter action (the interruption) → Past Simple

Common signal words: while + Past Continuous, when + Past Simple, as + Past Simple, and time phrases like at 8 o'clock yesterday, all evening, all morning.

⚠️ Stative verbs (know, like, want, believe, own) are not usually used in the continuous form. Say I knew, not I was knowing.

Examples

  1. I was reading a book when the doorbell rang.
  2. They were playing football when it suddenly started to rain.
  3. While she was cooking, he set the table.
  4. I worked from 9 to 5 yesterday. (no interruption — Past Simple only)
  5. At 10 p.m. last night, we were watching a film.
  6. He broke his leg while he was skiing.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ I was knowing the answer. ✅ I knew the answer. — state verbs don't take continuous.
  • ❌ While I did my homework, the phone rang. ✅ While I was doing my homework, the phone rang. — the long action is in Past Continuous.
  • ❌ I was walked to school when I saw a dog. ✅ I was walking to school when I saw a dog. — Past Continuous = was/were + verb-ing.
  • ❌ She was break the cup. ✅ She broke the cup. — short, completed actions use Past Simple.
  • ❌ When I was hearing a noise, I called you. ✅ When I heard a noise, I called you.

In real life

A short conversation about a holiday in Italy.

Mia: What were you doing when the storm started last Friday?

Leo: I was eating gelato near the beach. The wind blew my napkin into the sea.

Mia: Oh no! Did you run for cover?

Leo: No, I was laughing too hard. Then a stranger handed me a new napkin and smiled.

  1. 1In the combination Past Continuous + Past Simple, which tense gives the background picture?

The longer action already in progress is the background, so it uses Past Continuous (was/were + verb-ing).

  2. 2In the dialog, what was Leo doing when the storm started?

Leo says, 'I was eating gelato near the beach' when the storm started.

  3. 3Which conjunction is typically used with the Past Continuous?

'While' introduces the longer, in-progress action in the Past Continuous.

  4. 4Why is 'I was knowing the answer' wrong?

Stative verbs like 'know' describe states, not actions, so they normally take Past Simple, not Past Continuous.

  5. 5Which sentence correctly combines both tenses?

It uses 'while' + Past Continuous for the long action and Past Simple ('saw') for the short interruption, and 'see' is a stative verb here.
